How do you know God is talking to you?

A lot of you know that I am an aspiring Bible preacher and teacher. But part of the reason why I’m still an aspiring Bible preacher and teacher is because I have more questions than answers.

Like, what’s the deal with people saying, “God told me to do this or that.”

I still don’t understand that.

I was talking to this guy I knew, and he was like, “I was at church, and I felt like God was telling me to quit my job. So I did.”

Now, I would never tell someone, “No, God didn’t tell you to do that, you dummy.” Because what if God did tell them to do that? How do I know?

I hear a voice every day telling me to quit my job. That voice is my voice, and sometimes it’s audible.

Tell me how you know God is telling you to do this or that.

One time there was this pastor telling a story during a sermon. He said, “There was a hospital trying to buy our church property to make a parking lot. I felt that God was speaking to my spirit saying, ‘Ask for $5 million.’ So I went into the negotiation with the hospital and asked for $5 million. And we ended coming out of there with $3.5 million for the property.”

All the people listening to the sermon were amazed at how much money the church got from the deal. And they were clapping and everything.

Maybe this is blasphemous for me to even ask, but if God told you $5 million, aren’t you disobeying by coming away from the deal with any less than $5 million?

I don’t know because it bothers me that some people talk like God sometimes talks to them. What’s wrong with me that I’m just left making a rational decision based simply on natural environmental factors?

Divine bacon
Then there’s this other story. People talk about “God things.” The story usually goes, “I was making a salad for the church potluck. I couldn’t find the bacon bits. If I didn’t get the bacon bits in the salad, the whole church potluck would have been ruined. I was praying, and I felt God told me to look behind the flour. And I was like, ‘God, are you serious?’ And he was like, ‘yes.’ I moved the bag of flour over, and there were the bacon bits! That’s a total ‘God thing.’ ”

I’ve heard lots of stories like that. “God things” usually revolve around missing ingredients. I can’t say whether God actually told someone to look behind the flour to find the bacon bits. But any cynical man visiting the church would wonder, “Why is God telling her where to find bacon bits and not actual bacon?”

I don’t know about the whole “God things.” They’re mini-miracles. Certainly my life is filled with a bunch of miracles. Most of them are too hard to explain. But none of them revolve around dialog between me and God. What’s wrong with me?

That’s a question that I have. Some people are like, “Jimmy, why are you telling us these stories that don’t even make sense?”

The reason is … I don’t even know. This is one of my questions. When God is telling people to do things, how do they know it’s God telling them?

I pray a lot and I read the Bible. I’d like to see God ask me to do something specific. Letters on a page, like I read in the Bible. Like, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Bible, page 811)

You know, that makes sense. It’s right there. Black letters on a white page.

But there’s another passage of Scripture that says, “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” (Bible, page 988)

It’s kind of scary to think that God’s going to tell you to do something.

For me, the thing is not whether or not I want to obey God, but the question is what does God want me to do? If I were to identify one thing today that I would say “I feel that God is leading me to do this,” it’s this. To sell my home and move to Pittsburgh. Or as I call it, Arm Pittsburgh.

How do you know what God wants you to do? When you say you feel led by God, what does that even mean to you? I prefer to have it all written down, but even Bible characters did crazy things when they were led by God.

How can you tell God is talking to you? Leave your idea in the comments below. Thanks, bros.

Read the Bible, do what it says, then do what is right. It will basically be the same as what you want, if you’re doing what the Bible says – circular reasoning. That’s what I think, anyway.
